YogaVahini is offering two workshops that are part of our Yoga Vaidya training. These are open to all yoga teachers and  therapists trained in the Krishnamacharya tradition.

Understanding the Eye and Eye care
10 July 2024
9.30 am -12.30 pm: “How we see, understanding some common eye conditions, how yoga can help” with Dr. P S Rekhi

3 – 5.30 pm: “Yoga for eye care” with Smt. Lakshmi Ranganathan
This session will focus on the role of the eye as a sense organ in the perception and experience of an individual, relationship between eyes and other sense organs and the mind. Lakshmi will  share practices taught by Sri T Krishnamacharya for taking care of this precious organ so that we can make it part of our daily routine. Application of these practices in therapeutic conditions will also be briefly discussed. 

Understanding the Special World
11 July 2024
9.30 am – 11 am: Understanding special needs with Dr. Karthiyayini Mahadevan – An overview of the conditions: Autism spectrum, cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome and ADHD. 

11.15 am – 1 pm: A dialogue with a panel of experts who work on different aspects of healing
(Panelists: Dr. Suchitra Ramkumar, Dr. Karthi Mahadevan, Jyothi Shanbhag, Mala Chinnappa)

2 – 3 pm: Understanding the special world through art with Mala Chinnappa

3 – 5.15 pm: Application of yoga for special needs with Jyothi Shanbhag 

This is a tentative schedule. It may change based on the availability of faculty and other logistics.

About the facilitators

Dr P S Rekhi
B Optometry
Spectrum Eye Care

Dr Rekhi completed his clinical training from Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, and postgraduate training from leading institutions in the US and Canada, with special emphasis on learning disabilities and dyslexia.

His clinic has been providing free services since its inception in 1991 to people with cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, and autism.

Lakshmi Ranganathan
She is a senior yoga teacher, who learned yoga from Sri TKV Desikachar from 1970 and Sri T Krishnamacharya. She was one of the first teachers in Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram where she worked till 1986. In 1990, she co-founded the Sanjeevani Ayurveda Yoga Centre where she taught therapeutic yoga. She was an honorary yoga instructor at “The School” run by the Krishnamurti Foundation of India.

Lakshmi has taught yoga for more than 50 years and has conducted many workshops on pranayama and meditation. She is adept at the therapeutic use of yoga and has led several therapy seminars on topics such as yoga for women and the role of one’s breath in yoga therapy and philosophy. She also trains teachers in yoga therapy and practice.

The teachings of Sri T Krishnamacharya and Sri TKV Desikachar have had an inestimable influence upon her study of yoga. She and her daughter, Dr Nandini Ranganathan, translated Sri Krishnamacharya’s treatise Yoga Makarantham into English.

Dr. Karthiyayini Mahadevan
She graduated from Madurai Medical College and did her postgraduate diploma in developmental neurology. She has been working with children with special abilities. Move and Heal is her faith. She uses movement, rhythms, nutrition, and external therapy as tools to understand and work with the children. 
Dr. Suchitra Ramkumar
She works in health education and with a consumer and civic action group. She has been associated with Krishnamurti schools, the government of Tamil Nadu, and with various NGOs for a long time. She is a trained counsellor and practices as one. She also works on sexuality education for school and college students and builds teachers’ capacities in teaching the subject. She has worked with children with learning difficulties. She uses remedial methods of teaching and learning with first-generation learners and teachers.
Mala Chinnappa
Mala is an advertising designer by profession and art educator by passion. She is the mother of a special child. She is also the facilitator at A Brush With Art, a visual art program for the neuro-diverse.
Jyothi Shanbhag
Jyothi is a yoga teacher and therapist who has been working with children and young adults for over 20 years. She has worked as a teacher and therapist in educational institutions, Spastic Society, and RASA (School for Differently abled). She offers personalised therapy classes and mentors teachers and therapy trainees at YogaVahini.
